Pashupati Nath Temple:
It is the holiest Hindu pilgrimage spot situated 5km east of Kathmandu, the temple of Lord Shiva. The richly ornamented pagoda houses, the scared linga, or phallic symbol of Lord Shiva fascinates everyone. There are also small temples dedicated to other deities. The temple was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monument List in 1979. Basically thousand of pilgrims from Nepal and India pay homage to this temple everyday. Locals daily worship and receive blessing from lord Shiva early in the morning. Near the temple at the edge of Bagmati River lies "Arya Ghat" where cremation is performed. There is also a large market in the streets surrounding the temple.
Swoyambhunath:
This is on of the world's most glorious Buddhist chaityas .It is said to be 2,000 years old. Painted of the four sides of the spire's base are the all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. It is 3km west of Kathmandu city and is situated on a hillock about 77m above the level of the Kathmandu valley and hence commands an excellent view of the valley. This stupa is the oldest of its kind in Nepal .It was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monument List 1979.
Boudha Nath Stupa:
It is the focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal and lies 8km east of Kathmandu and is the largest stupa in the South Asia, looming 36m overhead. It was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monument List in 1979 is also known as Khasti. The name 'Boudhanath' is composed of two different words Boudha and Nath. Boudha means wisdom and the suffix Nath stands for Lord. Thus Boudhanath means the Lord of wisdom. In this area there are more than 45 Buddhist monasteries
Patan Durbar Square:
Patan Durbar Square complex, situated in the center of Patan city, houses the residence of the former family of Patan. The Square and its surroundings provide very good example of ancient Newari architecture culture. The palace has three main courtyards the central and the oldest is Mul Chowk. To the west of the complex are a dozen free standing temples of various sizes and styles. Krishna Temple, Bhimsen Temple, the Golden Temple of Hiranya Varna Mahavira and Sundari Chowk mark the architectural excellence of its era. The Sundari Chowk with the sunken bath of Tusha Hiti, contains exquisite woodcarvings, stone, and metal sculpture. Patan Durbar Square also houses a temple of Taleju Bhawani.
Hanuman Dhoka durbar square:
Hanuman Dhoka durbar square: It is the historic seat of royalty. The Durbar square, with its old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. it is here that Kings of Nepal are crowned and their coronations solemnized. Interesting things to see here are: Taleju Temple built by king Mahendra Malla in 1549 Ad, the temple of Kal Bhairav, the God of destruction, Nautalle durbar, Coronation Nasal Chowk, the Gaddi baithak, the statue of King Pratap Malla, The Big Drum and the Jagannath Temple. It was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monument List In 1979.
Budhanilkantha (sleeping bishanu):
Budhanilkantha (sleeping bishanu):About 8km north of Kathmandu,at the base of Sivapuri hill is a remarkable colossal statu of Lord Vishnu ,reclining on a bed of snakes.This is on of the masterpieces of stone sculptures of the lichchhavi period .This fifty century statue is in the middle of a small pond and seems to float in water.
